The SANS 10400 regulation regarding firefighting equipment requires that a number of fire extinguishers are needed depending on the occupancy classification as per the table set out in the National Building Regulation. The selection of the type of fire extinguisher will mainly depend on the types of fires that can be expected in a specific workplace. It is clear that firefighting equipment needs to be available at all worker homes.

SIZA accepts that sand buckets will be sufficient to serve as firefighting equipment as an alternative and/or as additional fire safety measurements. Workers need to be trained in the purpose and use of the sand buckets. Alternatively, a fire extinguisher can be made available in a central place that is accessible to occupiers at all times.
