To ensure that there is no health risk relating to water, the SIZA Social Standard requires that a microbial analysis of the water must be done. Water should be tested according to a risk assessment and meet the South African National Standard for Drinking Water – SANS 241:2015. Water shall comply with the numerical limits for the microbiological determinants specified in table 1 of SANS 241. Where a microbiological value exceeds the numerical limit provided in table 1, an unacceptable risk to human health is implied. As the microbiological value increases, an increased risk to health is implied. The coliforms may not exceed 10 units per 100 ml.

For an extensive and complete list of all determinants, view SANS 241-1:2015.
