Today’s world is ever evolving. Buyers of agricultural products not only look for compliance with standards, but also value evidence that businesses effectively manage their employees and ensure that workers are heard and supported. These aspects are considered genuine indicators of a socially responsible and resilient operation. SIZA’s programmes are designed to help suppliers nurture this environment and use practical tools to enhance the welfare and engagement of everyone working in the South African Agricultural industry.
A thriving workplace is one in which employees feel respected, protected, and able to voice concerns without fear. The SIZA Social (Ethical) Standard encourages two-way communication and mechanisms for workers to raise issues, including the formation of worker committees and effective grievance processes, which play a key role in strengthening worker well-being.
To support this, SIZA’s Voice for All programme provides structured channels for workers and other stakeholders to raise concerns directly, confidentially and safely. Any interested party can submit grievances via a toll-free hotline, WhatsApp, email, or a digital grievance line, which are then handled through transparent steps that include internal and independent reviews, mediation, and resolution recommendations by independent, objective panels.
Worker voice not only prevents issues before they escalate, but it also builds trust and demonstrates to buyers and auditors that your business is serious about continuous improvement. Effective communication systems and worker committees are often featured in audits as good practices, reinforcing your commitment to fair labour practices. Please note that, for us to act effectively, complaints must include sufficient detail and be linked to a specific situation, site, or incident. We assure you that confidentiality and anonymity remain our key priorities throughout the process. When concerns are shared with care and clarity, they can be addressed with fairness and respect
SIZA Support and Toolkit
Supporting worker well-being requires more than good intentions. It requires tools, information and training that empower management and staff alike. SIZA’s capacity-building initiatives include practical, accessible resources, such as training webinars and workshops, as well as downloadable templates, posters, and guidance documents, all designed to help businesses implement ethical practices on the ground.
Among these resources:
- Worker communication and grievance reference materials, including Voice for All posters and videos available in multiple languages to promote awareness and accessibility.
- Training on building and supporting worker committees to ensure meaningful participation by employees in workplace decision-making.
- A training programme, “When Grievance Becomes Good Practice”, is offered to assist businesses that want to or need expert social workers to effectively train workers, supervisors, and management on the management of grievances in the workplace.

Prioritising worker well-being isn’t just a compliance requirement but also an investment in workforce stability, productivity and reputation. When workers feel their voices matter, they are more likely to engage positively, raise concerns early and contribute to a strong work culture that supports growth and market access. By encouraging worker voice, concerns can be raised and resolved early, helping to avoid more disruptive or far-reaching interventions.
Through the combination of worker voice mechanisms like Voice for All, structured engagement tools such as worker committees and a comprehensive support toolkit, SIZA offers suppliers a well-rounded set of resources to strengthen labour practices that benefit your people and overall business success.
