Die vryheid om te assosieer word deur die Internasionale Arbeidsorganisasie (ILO) as een van die vier kernarbeidsbeginsels beskou. In werklikheid gaan dit nog verder en klassifiseer dit as dié belangrikste arbeidsbeginsel. Saam met die Wet op Arbeidsverhoudinge stel die SIZA Etiese Standaard hierdie vereiste as ‘n beginselkodevereiste. Kode 5.6 vereis dat die bestuur redelike maatreëls moet tref om werkers in te lig oor hul regte ten opsigte van vryheid van assosiasie en kollektiewe bedinging.

Die belangrikste stap wat ‘n werkgewer in hierdie verband kan neem, is om ‘n omgewing te skep en te onderhou wat werkers in staat stel om hul vryheid van assosiasie te beoefen. Werkers wat nie van hul regte bewus is nie, is minder geneig om dit uit te oefen of selfs bewus te wees van die oortreding van hierdie regte. Dit is dus van kritieke belang dat werkgewers hul werkers inlig oor hierdie fundamentele reg as die eerste stap om ‘n werksomgewing te bied waarin hierdie regte nie net erken word nie, maar ook aktief gehandhaaf word.
