A SIZA audit can take place at any time just before or after the peak period, for example, pruning, harvesting, etc. It does not have to occur in the middle of the busiest period/harvest or packing time, as long as the minimum requirements are met and a full risk evaluation can take place. The minimum requirements are as follows:
- The audit must take place when at least 66% of the total workforce is present (including permanent and seasonal labour) because SIZA is obligated to draw a diverse sample from the entire workforce to conduct interviews with during audits. Worker voice is becoming increasingly important with the EU Due Diligence legislation.
- If the farm has a packhouse, cellar, or processing facility, the packing unit must be fully operational during the audit. During the Table Grape season, for example, auditors usually return once the packhouse is operational, as most table grape audits on farms are done before packing takes place.
SIZA offers the option for producers to apply for a bridging letter to cover the period between visits until the packhouse is also fully operational. Bridging letter applications are available if the producer’s previous Audit Completion Letter expires before the packhouse is indeed operational. Bridging letters are also available to give the producer time to complete their corrective action.
It is also true that sometimes seasons move, meaning peak periods shift due to weather patterns, shorter production, or later harvests. In such cases, the producer can engage with SIZA to find a solution.
